Course
Overview
Pests of public health importance,
parasites of human and animals, mites and ticks and their control, household
insects, insect pests of cash crops, industrial aspects including apiculture (honey bee culture), lac culture, sericulture (silk-worm culture),
aquaculture, snake venom, poultry industry, economic importance of mammals,
leather industry, dairy industry, wool industry, pharmaceuticals from animals,
bioactive substances from animals, pearl culture, wildlife and its management
with values, conservational approaches.
Objectives
1.
To
educate students about major pests & parasites of human and animal health
importance.
2.
To
provide students an insight into the commercial aspects of zoology.
3.
To
enable students to analyze significance and applications of animals derived
products with focus on pharmaceuticals and bioactive substances.
4.
To
educate students about conservational approaches and commercial and
conservational rearing of animals.
5.
To
enable students to design and plan various kinds projects on animal cultures
for commercial and conservational purposes.
Learning
Outcomes
After successful completion of the course
student will be able to:
1.
Describe
major insects and pests of public and animal health importance.
2.
Explain
and analyze application of animals with their biological products and the
commercial approaches.
3.
Explain
importance of animals generated products with special application in
pharmaceuticals sector.
4.
Depict
and analyze different conservational methods of animals and their values to
promote self -reliance and revenue through such management tools.
5.
To
design and plan various commercial and conservational farms and other culture
places.

Practical Work
- Introduction, guidelines, ethics, notebook writing
- Identification of various insects of economic
importance
- Identification of important fishes cultured in Pakistan
- Insect repellency testing
- Developing models of honey bee farm and aquaculture
farms
- Design silk-worm and lac culture farm models
- Observation of FCC Museum and preparation of
documentation for the same.
- Preparing and designing plans for zoological gardens
and safari parks.
- Preparing business plans and quality assurance plans of
various animal based industries like poultry, leather etc.
Course Policies
- Attendance:
For this course 75 % attendance in both classes and labs is required for
this course.
- Missed Exams:
If you fail to appear in the quizzes or exam you will be awarded zero
score. There will be no retake of any quiz or exam. If absence is
due to illness or unavoidable circumstances you may be allowed to appear
in a make-up exam on presenting the proof of reason for absence.
- Class performance
includes your classroom behavior. You should not move out unnecessarily or
distract other students. You are required to participate in all class
activities.
- You are required to submit all your projects through
Moodle and/or Turnitin (software for plagiarism-check). Assignments and
discussions will be available through these so be prepared.
- All communications will be through your FCC official
Email ID. Keep it active.
- Lab Rules: You
are expected to wear a lab coat while working on any experiment.
- Plagiarism / Cheating: There will be no tolerance for cheating or plagiarism.
The plagiarism policy given in the Student Handbook will be strictly
followed.
- Mobile Phone:
Use of mobile phone during quizzes and/or examination may result in
loss of marks or cancellation of quiz or exam.
